Story: Who will know there was a girl called Ava

If I dont tell them?

If I do not explain the wild hare that is following me

The one that pops it’s’ head from the burrow

The wild hare that makes you google if bunnies are vegetarian?

How will all of the men in suits and the women glue to their screens know there was once a girl named Ava and she and I would lay on summer meadows? We would watch the bunnies as they played circus. We would name the clouds and the rabbits. We drank cold coffee and ate pizza with the grease solidifying on the pepperoni. We reimagined the world if the bunnies were in charge.

She said they would never allow cancer to be a thing and I agreed.

It was a fact after all.

Or is that sharks?

One if them do not get cancer.

But not you.

Not you bunny.

The cells met and divided until your body was overwhelmed with them.

Two became millions incubated in your blood and tissue. Or was that me?

Haunt me.

It is a dare. It is a pinky swear. It is a vow.

We had been up.

I had been up.

Watching monitors. Up down green lines hopping with your pulse and your breath. You had been asleep for hours. I had been asleep for minutes.

Haunt me.

Green hills. Green walls. Sky blue ceilings and endless skies.

I’ll be back. Termination whispers.

A butterfly? A sparrow?

You will know me by my paws.

You will know me by my burrow

by my fur by my tooth.

That sounds ominous. Not bunny like at all.

You drift.

A cloud.

It takes fierceness to be small and soft.

There was a girl named Ava, once.

She died.

She came back.

She changed her mind.

She is something feral and fierce and soft and fluffy.

There was a girl named Ave who came back to me as a rabbit.
