The Night of the Murmurs
The mummers?
No that is quite a separate thing. This is the night of the murmers.
It is the night of the mouse chitters
Of the gossip of ravens
The quiet rage of owls
It is the night we hum.
Do not blanch we take turns.
Cook makes vats of black apple and birch honey tea.
It is a particular vibration we search for.
The hum the shivers glass
That disturbs newly turned graveyard dirt
One must walk with white candle and gray robes to the center of the orchard after the first black apple falls.
They will sit in the roots and hum.
It is only for an hour or so until the next comes to take the place.
I have heard it feels much longer.
No, I have never taken part.
Teachers are not allowed to offer themselves.
Not that it is dangerous.
No more so then crossing the stream on a new moon
Or whistling back to the pixies.
It is to be hummed in the spirit of Brahms.
Most tranquil I have heard.
I have hoped
It is a lullaby after all
For what?
Dear child even I do not know.
I heard once the mouse Greybeard had found a particularly interesting passage in the old library archives.
Sadly he did use it as bedding for his youngest clutch but his memory is sharp.
You may wish to go to the mice and ask if you are truly set on uncovering mysteries.
