When the dark frightens. When the hair and mile wide skirts are not enough to hide behind and candles burn to nubs too quickly. When the shadows lengthen and your favorite lapdog reminds you that you have a purpose you can stumble from your bed. Pass the governess snoring softly in front of a fire descending into embers. You avoid the loose floorboard that has always given you away. You walk to the door and open it to the snow settling on Versailles. You breathe in the Winter allowing the snow to settle on your eyelashes. You run. There is no cold that can reach your bones on a night frozen and clear with a sky in a chaos of stars brighter than the queens diamonds. You reach your arms wide and you spin. Gate, door, and hedges beneath the snow flip past your eyes and your hands are grabbed. Now it is you two spinning. Her eyes are bright and though you have never seen the ocean you know that is what the stones at her neck hold. You spin and wonder if you will ever see your bed again. The snow is above and below you. The branch your brother dared you to climb to is beneath both of your feet. Her hands are solid and you laugh.

When you wake your bed is dusted in snow and an opal is beneath your hand. You can not wait to find your brother and tell him he owes you an orange for you certainly reached the branch and so very much more.
